The Universe and Planet
 How it works...
The Universe in which Blackstaff is located is an alternate universe different from any universe any canon character might hail from.
- No Time Travel
- Does not exist in this universe. It's 100% impossible. Ships and characters sensitive to it will not be able to detect any sign of change; just the flow of time moves forward, undisturbed. No abilities that would affect the flow of time would work here.
- Effects of the Planet's Sun
- While the sun on Quadratus is different from the sun on Earth, it's more forgiving on imports that usually couldn't survive under it. Anything that would be killed by the sun in their native setting would recieve a lesser effect. The light will hurt them and make them smoke a little, but won't kill them. Similarly, while the sunlight of Quadratus would give Kryptonians some of the benefits of being under a yellow sun, the effects aren't as strong as Earth's sun.
For some of the enemies here, sunlight is a pacifier or a death sentence. - Powers/Magic
- As discussed here, there are a set of universal properties called "sources", and many people are born with or learn connections to it.
However, its strength is limited and tapping into it can exhaust the user or their abilities might not have the range they once did at home. - Alternate Universe
- In this universe there coexist alternate versions of a whole host of planets and species that are familiar from other works of fiction, though.
Although characters might be familiar with the various worlds, this is an alternate reality and the history of these worlds is not like the history they know. Aside from major historical figures from these planets' pasts, the timelines progressed in such a way that people from their contemporary time in their own universe do not exist in this one. (For example, while the planet Vulcan may have had a cultural founder named Surak, there is no alternate universe Spock here.) More on what's known here at the FaQ. - Different Types of Humans
- Humans had a lot of time to adapt, so there's quite a range of human subspecies you might encounter. Genetically engineered, natural mutations, psychics, ones with genetic memory- once they were off-world, they adapted over generations to a number of environments. Some humans you meet may not be "human" as you'd think of them. Quadratus's early explorers were human.
- Political Odds
- With so many cultures, it's no wonder there's been extreme political debate. War between the bugs and kaiju, access from different universes, simple petty dislike. This occasionally leads to minor skirmishes between people in public, but usually nothing major. It's enough to occasionally give patrol a headache.
When adjusting to life here on Quadratus, it might be important to seek out a counselor or physician for assistance if your body is doing anything unpredictable. Be open-minded and ready to ask for help.

Restricted Substances/Narcotics (available through the Black Sun Syndicate)
- Squick: a reverse "love potion" that can be tailored to discourage certain types of advances. The side-effects of withdrawal can include headaches, nausea, and tingling in one's extremities.
- Mad Dog: gives its users the ability to see immediate short term likely possibilities. The side-effect of use is bursts of anger, and with continued use the side-effect becomes permanent.
- Scorpion: gives the user the ability to generate poison in their saliva. It's not in frequent use, but can be extremely potent. Some species are more susceptible than others. Klingons, Augmented humans, and Narn so far seem to be immune to the poison. Continued use makes the condition permanent as well as rendering the user infertile.
- Transmute: gives many bipedal species the temporary ability to shapeshift into someone else of their species. Safe for many, dangerous to anything that's temperature runs a little hot. Continued use builds up a tolerance and it works for less and less time.
- Cave Spider Cocktail: a substance produced through the venom of the cave spiders to make people forget certain bits of information.
