Rules

Game rules listed here have scrollover pop-ups for RP jargon in the event someone new to journal RP joins. All rules listed here are subject to change as influenced by the player base. The rules here are written with the intention of keeping the game a place where everyone can have fun together and be as comfortable as possible, and to inform players new to DW what these acronyms mean. If you hover over certain words they'll give you definitions.

  1. Do not god-mode.
  2. Respect other character's boundaries when it comes to 4th walling.
  3. Do not push players around.
  4. ICA=ICC: This is a setting with laws and it needs to be treated like one.
  5. If you're having issues with another player, try to discuss it.

  1. Use content and trigger warnings whenever possible.
  2. Activity is monthly.
  3. Use caution with extreme content.

A.) Player Behavior
  1. Do not god-mode. All players should respect other players by being willing to place limitations on their character's behavior. This doesn't mean to play them OOCly, but it does mean to find some IC way to respect the boundaries of the other player so that plots can play out for the most enjoyable results. If you infomod accidentally and the other player asks you to retcon the conversation, both parties should do so.

Example: Sue is in a fight with Joe. Sue writes in that her next blow knocks Joe unconscious without asking Joe's player. Another example is that Joe manages to dodge every single one of Sue's blows even though Sue is a capable fighter.

Alternately, Sue robs a bank. Joe can't magically know she robbed a bank. Joe needs to conduct an investigation, which means engaging other characters and not just using a scanner. Sue's player can protest Joe figuring out that she robbed a bank if there was no logical way that can be shown for Joe to make the discovery.

  2. Respect other character's boundaries when it comes to 4th walling. Every universe that is represented in this game is treated as "real", so please respect other players when characters know more information about a character than what that character has given. This includes having read their canon or being from their future. Refer to that character's 4th wall permissions (or ask them). If a player asks for a retcon, respect their wishes. If players need IC reasons to forget information, excuses can be made though it will be clearly established in the brochure everyone reads that alternate universes and scenarios mean they might not have accurate information.

Example: Sue knows another version of Joe from a game. Sue knows about Joe's entire past and can warn Joe's CR about his past as an exotic dancer and hitman. Joe's player wants this knowledge to come out organically but Sue's revelation keeps this from happening.

  3. Do not push players around. There is no way to strictly enforce this rule without the first rules obviously being broken, but if there's something a player doesn't want to play or is hesitant to play? Don't railroad or harass them them into it. If we're given enough complaints, you will be kicked out.

Example: Joe had a relationship with Sue in canon, but when Joe is introduced to the game Sue is in a relationship with someone else and Sue's player doesn't want to pursue a relationship with Joe. Rather than looking for alternatives Joe's mun threatens to have Joe experimented on by Dr. Butterball and only Sue's love can save him, a plot that Sue's mun hasn't agreed to.

  4. ICA=ICC: This is a setting with laws and it needs to be treated like one. If your character commits a crime against another player's character, they must accept repercussions (especially in the case of serious crimes). Even if both players agree to a character being the victim, they will likely have CR eventually alerted to it unless it's covered remarkably well. Also for security officers, asking them to be incompetent at their jobs is unfair. Acknowledging that some criminals are very good at what they do, too, some behavior with NPCs will be permitted (as we are actually going to need criminals for part of the plot), but if we receive complaints the player will be asked to stop.

Minor crimes can include theft, property damage, fights, breaches in privacy (wire-tapping, hacking, psychic spying). Major crimes can include murder/assassination, physical violation, mind-control, torture, threatening or killing large numbers of people.

We also ask that people planning to do any of these things with their characters respect that other characters will want to do something about it later. If your character commits a major crime (and aren't under any mind-altering effects), they can't be assumed to escape consequences. They can be killed in a take down battle, shipped off to a supermax prison, or sent to a gulag but it is absolutely necessary that they be held accountable. For minor crimes, it is possible for them to not be caught so long as they aren't serial offenders, or get off with warnings, minor fines, brief jail stays, or community service.

Example: Sue is planning to assassinate Dr. Butterball. Sue successfully does this, but Sue's player wants them to get away with it when there are several security characters that could figure out who did it from the obvious in game evidence against her. Sue's player insists that she shouldn't get caught because if she were then Sue would have to leave the game. This limits the other characters in doing their jobs (and can also open them up for accusations from other characters about their failure to perform their duties).

  5. If you're having issues with another player, try to discuss it. Many times that a player has a problem it can be fixed by simple communication. With most of these, the first option is to ask the other player to reconsider their actions and say that you're not ready to do something. Also if a player says they're not ready to do something, respect that.

Be forward and honest with other players and know the difference between assertiveness and aggression (examples here and here). If you continue to have problems with another player, take them to one of the appropriate moderators.

If a player has had serious problems with a player in the past and they app, the mods will hear them out on blocking the application. If this happens, the player will be contacted privately through their listed app contact and asked to withdraw. However, because people can change over time and we would like to give the game a chance to grow, we ask that people give people they had minor issues with in the past a chance and avoid them. Journal RP is a relatively small community and people tend to run into one another over and over again.

Example: Sue's player is unhappy that Joe's is god-moding her. She asks Joe to stop. Joe should stop. If Joe does not stop or fights her on the matter, neither should leave hateful status messages for the other to see. They should contact the mods through one of the available methods.

B.) Content
  1. Use content and trigger warnings whenever possible. Some characters come from canons that have severe content, and these topics will come up in threads. In order for the character to be played, there's no avoiding mentions. So we ask that people, at the very least, list sensitive topics in the warnings and whether it's just in discussion or if it's something that happens. Every character should have their general character history content warnings available on their permissions, which can be found linked by the character on the taken characters page.

This doesn't just mean triggering content, but also sexual content. No one wants their grandmother to look over their shoulder at fake people engaging in foreplay.

Example: "Warnings for discussion of suicide, swearing, and sexual abuse. Robbery at gunpoint committed in the course of the thread."

  2. Activity is monthly. Until there are at least ten players AC is currently lifted.

Activity will be two samples every month. Here are examples of an activity sample:
    • a network post with some comments (no set number, enough to show there's activity)
    • a log post with some comments
    • a starter in a group post with some responses
    • log, network, or inbox thread(s) with seven comments from your character
Any two of these or combination will work for AC, such as two posts, a log and a post, or two threads. Combining threads is allowed.

It's important that players seem to be engaged in threads and don't neglect their CR. But it's also important that players don't let tagging become another stress. If you need to go on break, take a hiatus and announce it in the OOC Community. Hiatuses will be respected, and we also respect that someone might have to take unexpected absences. Posthumous hiatuses are allowed. If you don't check in to an activity check and your character isn't listed as on hiatus / slowatus, they will be removed.

As a request, while we know not every tag will be perfect and no one expects them to be, in the interests of having a fun game for everyone try to make sure your tags give the other players something to work with and respond to.

  3. Use caution with extreme content. Specifically playing out non-consensual sex, graphic violence against children and pets, and domestic abuse against a significant other in the communities is strongly discouraged. While it may be create an interesting and emotionally tense reaction for a character it will also very likely make other players very uncomfortable to work around it and nearly impossible for some characters to ignore. Even with warnings this can go over very badly and asking someone to interact with that, even at the periphery, is asking a lot.

Not only that, it makes the comedic/action-adventure feel of the setting more difficult. Later interactions between the characters involved would probably not be easy for anyone involved, and stands a very good chance of violating rule A.4. It would be very unlikely for someone to do these things to another PC or to multiple NPCs and not be called out for it. While it isn't blocked entirely (given that wars and criminal organizations are a part of the master plot of the game and the history of some characters will refer to it) we ask that players use strong discretion when using these as developmental plots.

Example: Sue can talk about the horrible incident where her father killed her pet baby sabertooth dodo to teach her a lesson, or a psychic can discover the memory in her head. Dr. Butterball shouldn't exact revenge on Sue by performing horrible experiments on a pet baby sabertooth dodo in a brutal reminder of her past.
