General NPCs
NPCs around Blackway include various sorts of alien races, regular old garden variety humans (and some subspecies), cyborgs, and androids. Not all of them will be humaniform, either, but will be appropriately built to use all of the facilities. It can be assumed that there are additional NPCs in all of the jobs outside of the extra-dimensional hires. There are also naturalized imports: people that came in through the travel agency but no longer wish to return and have become a permenant resident of the community. They no longer have access to the import communicator filters.

People that live closer to the resort tend to enjoy the security of the resort more, so they live a higher quality of life. More of the shopping establishments are built there as well. The far end of Blackway is a dangerous district where the smugglers skulk around and avoid security. They'll generally appear to be gruffer individuals, sometimes slovenly and sometimes gaudy and ostentatious to advertise how successful they are. Warrior races prefer this end of town, too, because it means less people are inclined to report open brawls or press charges against minor property damage, and if someone dies in a traditional battle it's easier to haul them off and blame the disappearance on the wild hounds in the woods. No one wants to get investigated. Security officers will be stationed closer to the resort to maintain a constant defense of the protective forcefield, but they do wander the town looking for petty crimes.

Criminals have little hidden cells and alcoves deep in the caves and abandoned mines of Quadratus. The sizes of these might vary, but considering the three organizations that attempt to smuggle things away from the planet have interstellar strength they can be quite large, and they keep quite well hidden. They can be assumed to be dangerous if you happen across them. Unless you're working for them, that is. Then they'll welcome you with open arms and might even provide you with a line of defense when you need to escape security (let's hope they didn't get a good look at your face).

Things you can do!
  • Assume anyone of most species are around. If they're not native, they could be another import that fell off the radar and became a part of the community.

  • Make up your own character or species.

  • Use an NPC multiple times.

  • Kill or otherwise maim a non-modded NPC (with respect to Rule A.4).

  • Be injured by or attacked by a non-modded NPC.

  • Do business with an NPC.

Things you can't do!
  • Treat an NPC like a player character.

  • Make inordinate assumptions of the NPCs named here; if it's not in their description, don't do it.

Hannibal Chau

Status: Import

Role: De facto leader of the Black Sun Syndicate on Quadratus.

Personality: Chau is ruthless and meticulous, and is never seen dressed any less than extravagantly. He wants to leave no stone unturned, and he wants his product handled discretely. He doesn't trust, and if someone doesn't have a stake in his well-being he doesn't have any interest in them. He may look like he lives extravagantly, but he's a slave to his greed and his curiosity. He's easy to bargain with if you make it worth his while.

Availability: Chau is in hiding, and will only appear in discrete locations on request and with good reason. He will need to be actively sought out. Please contact the moderators if he is needed for a thread or assumptions.

Harry Mudd

Status: Import

Role: Vender

Personality: If you want cheap or questionable items? Harry Mudd is the man for you. Though you would do well to make sure that his products work before you purchase them, because Harry Mudd will get away with anything that he possibly can for a few extra emeralds. He's loud and boisterous, and will be doing his best to try and get you to notice them.

Availability: Availability: Once a month he'll make an appearance in a village market post, NPCed by a mod. Otherwise he'll be unavailable for contact, because he's going to go home and deal with his nagging wife in his downtime.

Jabba the Hutt

Status: Import

Role: Local head of the Orion Syndicate.

Personality: Jabba is a figure of excess. He is the Trimalchio of the criminal world, all tasteless extravagance. He enjoys great quantities of (mostly very gross) food, parties, and scantily clad slave girls. He finds amusement in torturing or watching the deaths of people who displease him. And if someone crosses him, betrays him, or breaks a deal, he will spend a fortune to make sure that that person is crushed. He is not a very nice alien. Also, he only speaks Huttese and hires a translator (although he understands Standard well enough).

Availability: Jabba never leaves his opulent home. If you want to talk to Jabba directly, you must come to him. Please contact the moderators if your character would like an audience with the mighty Jabba for a thread or to work out an assumed interaction. (Players may also feel free to assume interactions with Jabba's minions anywhere in the town without contacting the mods.)

Pugsy

Status: Local

Role: Owner of Pugsy's Bar

Personality: He speaks tersely and only when necessary, but he listens attentively to all of his customers (and their woes). He earned his name from an old human friend whom he was fond of but who left. He generally doesn't mind what the patrons do in his bar, so long as they don't threaten customers or break anything inside of it. If you do, you're going to be paying it off.

Availability: Pugsy can mostly be assumed to be at the bar, but he's out and about in town frequently. There's no need to contact mods to NPC him.

Xûr, Agent of the Nine

Status: Import

Role: Vender

Personality: Xûr is a dubious individual, fidgety, who wears worn, dark clothing and says unsettling things if you stand too close to him (often concerning his own state as a living individual). However the items he offers are incredibly lucrative. Xûr can supply you with some of the best armor and defensive items money can buy--but it's going to be a lot of money. He doesn't come cheap.

Availability: Once a month he'll make an appearance in a village market post, NPCed by a mod. Otherwise he'll be unavailable for contact, as he somehow mysteriously disappears in this time.

Jeffers

Status: Local

Role: The voice and mind of Blackstaff.

Personality: The main NPC is the artificial intelligence, Jeffers, who can be assumed to be a respectful, polite butler with a stately manner of speech. His mustache wiggles on screen as he talks. To English speakers his accent may appear to be Received Pronunciation, for Japanese speakers it would be keigo, etc. He does most announcements and broadcasts. More can be found on him under the resort info as he is the primary intelligence behind the resort.

Availability: On mod requests and in response to announcements. His interactions, with both him and his bots, can be assumed. He cannot be hacked or otherwise corrupted for personal use.

Aoife

Status: Import

Role: Owner of the Petal and Stamen

Personality: Social and friendly, but very direct and not very good at metaphors. (She is not the one who named the business.) As open and inviting as she is, welcoming experiences of all kinds, she is very protective of herself and her workers, and does not tolerate rudeness or threatening behavior of any kind. She's also a stickler for rules and regulations, so you'd better make sure your client information is always up to date.

Availability: Most often found in her club, as she lives here (the location of her private room is a well-guarded secret), but she'll occasionally go out to the bars and to buy fresh flowers. Secretaries handle the paperwork for the club, but if you would like direct interaction with her or if your character would like to request the special pollen, contact the mods.

Garona Halforcen

Status: Import

Role: Local leader of the Blood Pack

Personality: Garona's rise through the ranks of the Pack was swift and brutal once she found out the previous gang leader had been using children as runners. Trained as an assassin from a very young age, Garona is independent and experienced in working under the nose of authority. She has a unique self-developed code of honor that she enforces down the ranks which does not preclude disposing of anyone who gets in the way of the Blood Pack's dealings.

Availability: Garona is a master of stealth, and won't allow herself to be found if she doesn't want to be. Contact Fire if you want to work out a meeting with Garona, either to thread out or assume.

Mr. Tukkus

Status: Local

Role: Mr. Tukkus owns "Mr. Jellicles," the place to go for arcade, VR, and bowling.

Personality: Mr. Tukkus is a dour looking bald man who appears more like a bouncer or a mafioso heavy than a businessman who runs a game shop. He is surly and gruff and behaves like a man who doesn't believe in the idea of fun, even though he sells fun for a living. He keeps a baseball bat behind the counter. It's not for baseball. People who make trouble in his establishment generally regret it.

Availability: Mr. Tukkus can be seen around town and in Mr. Jellicles. Interaction with him can be assumed and players can NPC him any time.

Jack Jeebs

Status: Import

Role: Vender

Personality: Jeebs is greasy and snivelling, and unfortunately for him easily intimidated. He can get someone in touch with one of the criminal heads of Quadratus--for a price--but not if you're a cop. There are criminals that scare him enough that most intimidation can't counteract his fear of being tracked down by someone really nasty. But he keeps a pretty good bead on the goings on. If you need to find something or someone, he can probably tell you where to look. He can also get you some jewelry with some unique properties, and that's even cheaper than the information.

Availability: Available once a month through a vending post.

F'nayalip & Joe Paglionico

Status: Local

Role: This married couple owns and runs F'nayalip and Joe's All Day Eats, the diner that uses only locally sourced ingredients. They've lived on Quadratus for decades and are well known about town, considered pillars of the community.

Personality: F'nayalip is a feather dinosaur alien, well into her middle age now. Although she was passionate in her youth, age and children (two girls and one boy, all adopted), have mellowed her temperament. She's orderly and no-nonsense, however. She is very loyal to her friends, family, and employees (who are almost like family themselves and most have worked at the diner for years). She also has three inch claws on her hands and will use them if you hurt her people. She is the business brains behind the restaurant. Her husband, Joe, is laid-back and easy going, always wearing a friendly smile. He is kind-hearted and a bit gullible, easily taken advantage of if his wife isn't around to watch him. He was the original chef and creates all the recipes for the restaurant.

Availability: They can be assumed to be at the diner or around the nicer parts of town, and occasionally in the not-nice parts of town, volunteering at the soup kitchen and donating extra food. They can be NPCed by players at any time and there's no need to contact the mods to NPC them.

Upsher & Doff

Status: Import

Role: Upsher and Doff are a pair of journalists. Upsher is a writer and Doff a photographer. (They got their start in tabloids but are trying to branch out. Nevertheless, tabloid style still permeates their work.) They arrived just before the quarantine was instated, hoping to report on the diplomatic summit. And then all the ambassadors were evacuated and they were trapped with the quarantine. So they decided to report on the quarantine and look for juicy scoops in Blackway and the resort.

Personality: As typical for the journalist personality, they are curious and incredible stubborn once they think they've got a hold on a potential story. They have few qualms about invading privacy to get to the bottom of something. They believe in the power of the press and free speech and dislike censorship or oppression. They are also a gay couple from a planet where it is deeply frowned upon, so they are very deep in the closet and have interest in and sympathy for "forbidden love" stories.

Availability: They can be assumed to be seen around town, asking questions and taking photographs and generally being nosy. If you would like to contact them for conversation or to offer them an interview or a tip on a story, please contact the mods.
