Archaeological Finds

Ruins

"Excavations on exoplanet 84759-39d, commonly known as Quadratus, have uncovered clear and unambiguous evidence that it once supported intelligent life. Multiple structures have been discovered at the base of Mount Melandoros. The full size of the settlement is as yet unknown, but preliminary data indicates a city of tremendous size likely to take countless decades to excavate fully. As yet, no evidence has been found to explain why the city was abandoned and what happened to the original inhabitants of Quadratus." (F. Beall, N. G'tyllien, et. al. "Analysis of Quadratus Preliminary Site Excavations." Transactions of the Galactic Archaeological Association vol. 204, p. 456)

The Ruins
Museum: Near the ruins is the Blackway Museum of Natural History. Among its exhibits are both historical artifacts from the ruins and biological specimens from the planet. The museum exhibits are on the ground floor. In the basement is storage for collection pieces not currently on display and workspace for artifact cleaning and restoration. On the top floor are labs and offices for the scientists plus a few classrooms and a small auditorium for talks and training.

Settlement structures: The ruins lie near the resort and draw scientists and tourists alike. Although many buildings have been fully excavated, countless more still remain buried and there's a great amount of archaeological work still to be done. The buildings are remarkably well preserved and show no hint of fire, war, earthquake, or any clear reason why the people left. There are no bodies or skeletal remains, but various artifacts, including some advanced technology, has been discovered.

Since the first discovery, many other cities have been unearthed and it is suspected many have yet to be found. The buildings themselves are made from a hard composite material of unknown origin and show no seams, mortar, or struts, just one smooth surface comprising the entire shell of a building. Over many of the doorways a symbol of a skull and a bow and arrow is carved. This is believed to be the death god of the people, and has since also been revealed to be their model for the skeletal archers that spawn at night. Explorers can also find untouched and undiscovered ruins all across the planet. Large, labyrinthine structures that archaeologists have identified as temples are especially rich sources of artifacts and treasures, but are also full of puzzles and booby-traps.

There is also rumored to be a pillar of pure gold somewhere in the jungle, but no one has yet verified it.

Although the population had some advanced technology, many of the artifacts are unsophisticated in nature: chairs and tables, dishes, vases painted with abstract angular designs, storage boxes, stylized figurines of bipedal individuals. No weapons beyond blades and arrows have been identified and it seems that the people were traders and largely avoided war. There are also numerous gems and precious metals in the ruins and part of the duties of the security team is to make sure thieves and black market antiquities dealers don't run off with valuable artifacts.

Temples
Lost temples can be found all over the planet. Their styles vary, but all are dangerous. They're also littered with high quality riches, and if you can survive a temple you can either donate priceless artifacts to the museum and earn the gratitude of the curators, or you can invite the Orion Syndicate or a roaming vendor to pay you handsomely for your finds. (If you choose the latter, do it subtly. The planet's status as a Historic Preserve means that artifacts aren't supposed to leave the planet, and you'll be fined if you get caught. But if you're affiliated with the Orion Syndicate, they will pay your fines for you..)

As temples are discovered, they'll be given thorough descriptions of things that can be encountered within the structure (though some items discovered in chests won't be revealed until the thread has made significant progress). Characters cannot discover temples without mod permission, but the mods will periodically offer up a new temple to be found at which point descriptions will be offered to plot participants.
Example temples include:

Spawner Rooms
More dangerous than temples are spawning rooms. Located deep in the cave systems, these strange devices somehow produce an infinite amount of aggressors since their activation. Being near one without back-up is almost a certain death sentence.

However, if you can breach a spawning room and destroy the spawner, the chest rewards can be truly impressive (or a severe disappointment depending on your luck). So far, the dangerous spawners have only been documented as producing skeletons but more research may shed light on the mysterious subject. Players may choose to have their characters find a spawner room at any time without needing mod permission, though if someone wants to find more than stale preserved bread and a hunk of solid iron, they must contact the mods.
Example spawners include:
